Tired of watching the same old blockbuster films with little plot and storyline? Every once in a while, there is a yearning to watch something just to feel and live and have a catharsis. The number of movies that are made for the sake of art is astoundingly fewer than those made solely for commercial purpose. Even when these rare gems do come out, it happens they are not available on any streaming platforms and we don’t know where to watch them. Aside from the little recognition they get from the critics or viewers, they are painfully underrated. Netflix has become fairly common now but it has a lot of content floating around that makes no sense at all. So here is the list of top 5 movies/tv shows on Netflix you will not regret watching-

  1. Blue Jay (2016)– This one is for the hopeless romantics out there. It has the age-old trope of reuniting the high school sweethearts after they have gone their separate ways. It is like they are in their own black and white bubble and no one exists in the rest of the world except them. Time seems to stop but Jim and Amanda keep moving. It is simple and pure and beautiful with a touch of sadness. It is the opposite of all the scheming and mind games. It raises the question that whether young love can bear the weight of life’s burdens and responsibilities. They are soulmates who have lost their way from each other. If these two couldn’t make it work, you will wonder who can? But it has lots of layers which the film has handled beautifully. I cannot say it more, it is a beautiful film.

2. Sir (2018)- He falls in love with his maid. Falling in love with someone lower than your ‘status’ has always been a taboo all around the world. The movie follows Ratna, a maid who earns her living and has a dream of becoming a fashion designer. She is a widow which means her life is over according to her family. Then there is Ashwin, who has broken off his engagement because his fiancé cheated on him. He is morose, she is cheerful. There are a lot of ways this movie could have taken but it chose the best one. It doesn’t try to establish an ideal world but a real one. Besides the most complicated question it asks in its tagline ‘Is Love enough?’, it also establishes that life doesn’t end because something bad has happened but there is always hope for something better. The best part about it is the ending. It could not have been more perfect.

3. Once Again (2018) – Love is ageless and the heart has no wrinkles. Tara is a middle aged restaurant owner who sends food to Amar, an actor. He relishes eating the food cooked by her. They talk on the phone and fall in love. But it is nothing like ‘The Lunchbox.’ It has more life and thrill. You will be spellbound listening to his voice. It has a predictable end but will keep you hooked till last. A disapproving son, supporting daughters, both single parents, a typical but not so typical story. As history goes, the world has not been kind to lovers and especially not older ones. These two face the same challenge. Every good movie has a shining star and this one shines because of its actors.

4. The End of the Fucking World– It is fucking awesome. It is a masterpiece. James goes from wanting to be a psychopathic killer to being one of the most pitiable and sympathetic character ever created. Alyssa is aggressive who doesn’t give a shit about anything until she does. Both suffer from childhood traumas and are just sad and bored with their lives. It is fresh and moves at a comic book pace. Never seen anything like it. The storyline, the actors, the aesthetics, it has it all. Season 1 is the best but season 2 does not disappoint in the least. It has the perfect ending and the opposite of Romeo and Juliet (which means its rooted in reality and logical) and it is binge-worthy.

5. Afterlife– A grumpy man who is pining for his dead wife. But it’s not what you would imagine: a brooding Byronic hero who becomes aloof and morose and looks like a Greek God. Instead, we have Ricky Gervais whose everyday dark humour makes it entertaining and sad at the same time. It is a blend of slap-your-knees-laughter and hand-on-your-heart-crying. Every episode has the same setting, characters and issues but still manages to bring something new to the table every time. It cannot be compared to The Office which doesn’t deal with larger-than-life topics. It is profound and simple.
