I love Reese Witherspoon. I have always admired her as an actress but after knowing about her book club and the work she is doing; she has become my inspiration. She promotes women-centric storytelling by picking a book each month that has a woman at the centre of the story. A lot of her picks have been made into movies and series which are a delight to watch.
Here are 5 books from her book club that I am including in my TBR list:
1. Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld–

Sally writes for a show which closely resembles SNL. She is writing a sketch based on a male colleague who is dating a bombshell actor and why the same would never work if the genders were reversed. Then comes Noah, a pop star who takes an interest in her. Now, she has to decide whether she will let her cynicism and insecurities get in the way of her finding love and happiness.
I chose this book because I like watching SNL and I want to see how it’s been dealt with in the book. I think it would be a fun read. Also, because I love a ‘good’ rom-com. They are not that common. Let’s see how this one turns out.
2. We Were Never Here by Andrea Bartz–

This one is a suspense novel. It’s about two best friends, Emily and Kirsten, who go on a backpacking trip to Chile and end up with a dead body in their hotel room. The same incidence had happened a year ago on another one of their trip. But is it a coincidence? That’s what we have to find out.
Suspense thriller is my favourite genre. I have high hopes for this one. Although the premise feels a little generic and ‘done before,’ I want to see which direction the story takes. The reviewers have mixed opinions about this book so I’ll have to judge it myself.
3. The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave–

It’s a mystery thriller. Hannah receives a note from her husband, Owen who goes missing. Her stepdaughter comes home with a bag full of money. Despite having a strained relationship, they now have to work together to figure out what’s going on. Their investigation reveals some shocking secrets about Owen’s past.
It has also been made into a series starring Jennifer Garner and Angourie Rice. I don’t want to watch the series before I read the book. I enjoy missing people mysteries so I can’t wait to read this one. It became an instant New York Times Bestseller and spent 82 weeks on the Bestseller List.
4. Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister-

This one seems a little different and more original. It is a psychological thriller about a mom who sees her son stab a guy. She wakes up the next morning and finds that she has gone two days in the past, i.e. before the stabbing. Now she has to find out more information as to why the stabbing happened in the first place. She keeps going back further in the past until she gets to a point when she wonders if she was a bad mother and if that’s what led to her son being a killer.
This book explores time travel. I have never been a fan of stories which involve time travel because I think it’s a tricky as well as a convenient concept. But this one sounds very intriguing especially the way it deals with parenthood and the all the choices involved in making life altering decisions.
5. The Other Woman by Sandie Jones–

You guessed it right. It’s about a woman fighting with another woman for her man. But it’s not the cliched mistress. It’s the mother-in-law. I guess that’s also not so uncliched. However, this book has a twist.
Emily and Adam are in love. She thinks they are perfect for each other. The only problem is that Adam’s mother, Pammie would go to any lengths to get Emily to leave. It reminds me of the movie ‘Hush’ starring Gwyneth Paltrow but it’s ending is totally not what you would expect. I couldn’t bear the suspense so I read the spoilers and now I want to read it even more than before. Maybe I’ll pick this one first.
So how did you like my list of books from Reese’s book club? Which book from her book club do you like the most? Feel free to suggest more books in the comment section.
